Leafy Splatter Paint

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert is a classic book for fall!  The story follows the life of a sugar maple tree and explores how the tree changes throughout the seasons.  The illustrations are beautiful, and a cut-out leaf page allows for turning the leaf from red to yellow to red to yellow.  I think that is my daughter's favorite part! 

You need:

Paper

Leaves

Tape

Washable tempera paint
Toothbrush

1)  After looking for and finding leaves, stick them on the paper with double-sided tape or a small loop of tape.

2)  Put a small amount of tempera paint in a bowl.  Add a drop or two of water to thin the paint.  Demonstrate how to splatter the paint with the toothbrush.  Have fun splattering!

3)  Allow the paint to dry.  Predict what will happen when you remove the leaves.  Remove the leaves!

We did this messy activity in the bathtub.  We would've attempted it outside, but it was way too windy!
