Torn Paper Flag

With the 4th of July fast approaching, I wanted to share a little history about our nation's flag with the girls.  The book I picked is Red, White, and Blue by John Herman (it is actually a beginning reader -- Level 2).  It very gently tells the story of how our nation's flag was created and shares basic historical facts.  I like how it tells the story very simply and without elaborating any scary details of war.  I even learned some new things!  Princess was astounded that there is a flag on the moon.  I'll have to show her some photographs of it! 



With our focus on the flag, I picked a simple flag craft.  Tearing paper is great for strengthening little hands in preparation for writing and scissor skills.

You need:
Construction paper scraps
White paper
Glue

1)  Share a book about flags with your child.  Give your child a blank, white sheet of paper.  Show them how to tear paper and let them design a flag!!
